As the summer heat rolls on, so do water safety concerns, with the 71 drowning fatalities reported by Water Safety New Zealand in 2024, it’s top of mind for many.
However, with the cost-of-living crisis and rising costs of running leisure facilities creating increased financial pressure, there’s been a noticeable reduction in affordable access to swimming lessons across New Zealand.
At Belgravia Leisure, we believe water safety is essential, which is why we partnered with Waikato District Council to host a series of community events in January 2025. These events offered free pool entry and swimming lessons across Waikato’s pools, aimed to ensure everyone – no matter their financial situation – has the essential skills to stay safe in and around water.
The free community events, held at Huntly Aquatic Centre, Ngaruawahia Pool and Tuakau Pool, saw a huge turnout of over 500 people, providing families with fun and interactive ways to engage with water safety education. Attendees enjoyed inflatable obstacle courses, pool games and water safety tips.

Irene Smith, Area Manager for New Zealand said, “Given the tragic drowning statistics, it’s more important than ever to equip our communities with the knowledge and confidence to be safe in and around water.
“The turnout at these events is proof that people are eager to access free resources that help keep them and their families safe. It was great to see such positive engagement from all age groups, especially kids, who after speaking to parents we can confidently say have built a deeper understanding of water safety,” Irene explained.
For many families, the opportunity to participate in these free swimming lessons was not just a fun experience but a vital one. With the cost of swimming lessons being a challenge for some, parents shared their experience:
“Before these free lessons, we had to stop our kid’s swimming lessons because we couldn’t afford them anymore,” said one parent. “Being able to access these free lessons was such a blessing. My kids learned so much in just a few days and it gave me peace of mind knowing they’re more confident and safe in the water.”
Another parent added, “The swim teacher who took my 5-year-old was amazing, so patient and encouraging as my son is a bit fearful of trying new things. He gained so much confidence in just a few days so I’ll definitely be keeping him on”.
Irene explained, “With over 500 participants, these events showcase the value of accessible, community-driven programs that promote water safety and reduce drowning risks.
“Belgravia Leisure and Waikato District Council remain committed to making water safety a priority, with plans to expand programs and provide more opportunities for both children and adults to build essential water skills,” Irene concluded.
